Bringing Stupendous Man™ to life requires precision, especially when it comes to dynamic action scenes. After refining my 3D models in Blender and posing them in Unreal Engine 5.1, I take the process a step further by integrating them into Photoshop for highly accurate 2D illustrations. This approach allows me to maintain consistency in anatomy, foreshortening, and perspective while enhancing the comic’s signature high-energy style.
From 3D to 2D: The Photoshop Workflow
Once I finalize a character pose in Sparking Zero’s Unreal Engine, I capture high-resolution screenshots and bring them into Photoshop for further refinement. Here’s how I implement my 3D references into the comic creation process:
- Importing and Adjusting – I place the 3D pose screenshot into my working PSD file and adjust the opacity, ensuring it serves as a guide rather than overpowering the hand-drawn elements.
- Sketching Over the Model – Using the blue-pencil layer technique, I loosely sketch over the 3D pose, exaggerating key movements to emphasize motion and energy.
- Refining Line Art – I ink the finalized version, ensuring the bold outlines and dynamic shading maintain the manga-inspired aesthetic.
- Blending in Effects – The speed lines, impact bursts, and motion blurs are added to heighten the sense of action and make each frame feel alive.
- Adding Textures and Screentones – I use halftone patterns, crosshatching, and grayscale gradients to deepen the composition and enhance depth.
Maximizing the Benefits of 3D References
Using 3D models in Photoshop significantly improves my ability to create consistent and compelling artwork. Here’s what makes this approach a game-changer for Stupendous Man™:
- Extreme Action Poses – Complex foreshortening is easier to achieve without relying on distorted manual sketches.
- Consistent Character Proportions – Ensures Joey, Brandon, and Angela remain on-model across multiple panels.
- Accurate Lighting & Shadows – By referencing Unreal Engine’s lighting, I can add dramatic shading in Photoshop to match the scene’s mood.
- Dynamic Background Integration – Since the models already match the correct perspective, I can seamlessly place them into detailed environments.
Applying the Process to Stupendous Man™ Issue #6 & #7
The Joey vs. Brandon Kahn fight in Issues #6 and #7 is a perfect example of how this process enhances my work. The intense mid-air exchanges, heavy impacts, and environmental destruction all require a deep understanding of motion, weight, and force. By using 3D models in Photoshop, I can push each pose to its fullest potential while ensuring every action panel remains fluid and readable.
Final Thoughts: Blending Tech with Hand-Drawn Art
While 3D models and Photoshop tools help me create more dynamic and accurate illustrations, hand-drawn artistry remains at the heart of Stupendous Man™. My goal is to use technology as a supporting tool rather than a replacement for the organic, expressive qualities of traditional manga-inspired comics.
By integrating Blender, Unreal Engine, and Photoshop, I’m creating a hybrid workflow that allows Stupendous Man™ to reach new levels of visual storytelling.
